Psychosomatic Disorder

Somatoform Disorder is a chronic disease which generally occurs after people reach the age of 30 years. In this mental illness the person feels bodily symptoms like pain or ache in more than one part of body, this pain or ache has no physical medical reason. 
 

This condition creates a cycle of pain and worry, which is hard to break. 

It has been observed in many cases that people with sexual and physical abuse history have more chances to have this disorder. 

It is not caused by substance or alcohol abuse. 
 

Somatoform Disorder symptoms should be lasting for a minimum period of 6 months to be treated under the category of somatoform disorder. 

SYMPTOMS 

  • Headache 

  • Impotency 

  • Shortness of breath 

  • Chest pain 

  • Amnesia 

  • Pain during urination 

  • Painful menstruation 

  • Pain during intercourse 

  • Joint pain 

  • Diarrhea 

  • Vision changes 

  • paralysis 
     

Hypochondriasis  is a disorder in which a person is under the belief that he is suffering from some serious illness. They misinterpret some bodily symptoms such as headache for brain tumour, individuals suffering from this disorder are known as hypochondriacs. These people even after getting their medical tests done by a physician believe they have some serious illness. 
 

The symptoms should remain for a minimum period of 6 months to be diagnosed under hypochondriasis. 
 

SYMPTOMS 

  • Anxiety 

  • Nervousness 

  • Depression 

  • Concern about their illness affects social, family and work 

  • Frequently checking body for problems 

  • Visiting doctors frequently 

  • Continuously talking and discussing about their symptoms with family and friends 

  • Thinking they have a disease after reading about it
